Ready…set…soon cyclists of all ages from across the Midwest will push their pedals to match their mettle and barrel through the expansive, one-of-a-kind rugged trek that covers woods, waters and wonderland that only Northern Minnesota can deliver.
The Lutsen 99er, June 23-25, 2017, is a go-get-‘em mountain bike race paired with a line-up of cool activities that covers a whole lot of ground. As an indoor SPIN instructor, I have this crazy passion for cycling on a stationary bike and know ‘riding’ through hills and flats takes a lot of endurance — tallying the miles, tracking the calories and feeling that rider’s euphoria is motivating. But, I have an elevated level of admiration for athletes who sport their stuff and muster their might along rigorous off-road trails for miles upon end regardless of the weather and trail conditions. It’s quite a feat, indeed!
I keep thinking…maybe someday. And, after speaking with Peter Spencer, founder and race director, I have high hopes. According to Peter, over the years the race has gained momentum and shifted gears to bring in riders at all levels – plus families – to broaden the beauty of and breadth of the race. The team created alternate routes that cater to mountain biking novices (hello, self!) as well as kiddos and intermediate riders that include flanker routes like the 69er, 39er, 19er as well as youth events. The circuit wraps along a stunning area of natural terrain with rolling hills, Superior lake views, through Boreal forests and along snowmobile trails.
“Throughout the year, the North Shore offers memorable adventures for visitors and there’s always something happening ‘up north,’” Peter noted. “But next month’s Lutsen 99er represents a unique opportunity to experience Cook County’s scenic beauty while seeing it, riding it and discovering it first-hand. Riders can spend time together with friends and family, embrace this adaptable course at your own level and even take a moment to reflect on what it is that draws you to this part of Minnesota. Ultimately, we want visitors to enjoy all Lutsen has to offer, starting with this exciting course that winds through a variety of Minnesota’s most spectacular scenery.”
Ok, yep. This year we’ve got alternate plans over the Lutsen 99er weekend, but we’ll check it out next year. Visit the website to get a few details on the schedule and exciting happenings over the 4th weekend in June in Cook County! And, I have to admit, it was pretty exciting to chat with Peter on the phone! What an inspiring role he has had in creating a signature race in Lutsen that draws people from all walks of life to the North Shore.
