Warm, Woodsy & Welcoming: Duluth’s Detour-Worthy Coffee Shop

Cruising I-35 north toward the Superior Shore, Duluth welcomes travelers like a great aunt…never a cordial handshake, always a collossal hug. There’s the anticipation of the view that awaits around the Thompson Hill bend…a spectacular vista of Lake Superior, spotting the city’s iconic Aerial Lift Bridge in miniature, eyes searching quickly for ships in and near the harbor and zipping along feeling darn pleased to be almost 150 miles closer to vacation! Making tracks toward the heart of the city, we’re typically in need of a quick stretch and a refuel for both the car, the kids and grownups alike. On my last trip to Lutsen, my midway pit stop discovery…Dunn Brothers in Duluth—what a super spot!

First, this may qualify as the coziest coffee shop around with its quintessential Northern MN vibe…take a peek at the rustic log exterior and interior: a welcoming front porch (with space to sip your freshly brewed bev of choice and spy the lake); two stories of seating inside; a cozy fireplace to cut the chill; plenty of windows offering natural light; and little nook with comfy chairs for more intimate chit chats…

On the corner of London Road & 24th Avenue East, Dunn Brothers is an agate’s throw right off the London Road exit as I-35E comes to an end. Simply take a left at the traffic lights (near the Holiday Station) and you’ll find the timber-esque coffee and sandwich shop across the street from the Edgewater Hotel & Waterpark. There’s even a super handy drive thru…

I was happily surprised to see Dunn Brothers offers plenty of tempting menu items including warm and cold sammies, wraps and three soup options as well as yogurts, fruit and baked goodies…

I decided on the special Baked Potato Soup & the Candy Cane Mocha. Yes, I know, they really don’t pair well together. So I enjoyed the soup first, which was delicious, creamy and just the right amount for a road-stop mini meal.
