Eric and I ventured over to Superior National Golf Course to enjoy this stunning and scenic 27-hole course overlooking Lake Superior’s serene blue hues to the East and Lutsen Mountain’s vibrant green slopes to the West. We rented a cart + clubs, nabbed a to-go beer cooler + score card and set off for a relaxing game…
We figured zipping around a 9-hole stretch in our motorized Club Cart was the perfect July activity. Evan was sleeping in, the weather was ideal and we were both ready to quiet our phones. We wouldn’t want to text and drive!
Superior National, just off of Highway 61 in Lutsen, MN, is well groomed and welcoming.
The landscaping is a lovely mix of colorful annuals, regional perennials and wild wonders around the perimeter. Everything from majestic towering pine to raspberry bushes to dazzling wildflowers.
We called ahead for a tee time and there were plenty of slots open on a laid-back Wednesday. We opted for noon, a.k.a. legitimate time to crack a cold one! So it had been awhile since I’ve golfed. While I competed in high school and enjoyed the sport as a hobby my 20s, once our boys came along and things got busy I seriously neglected the links. So, imagine my delight in discovering that pro shops now accommodate thirsty golfers with a portable tote of potables – woo hoo!
The cozy and rustic clubhouse at Superior National carries through the North Shore vibe with a centerpiece stone fireplace, plenty of windows offering stunning fairway & mountain views, a decent MN-inspired tap-beer selection and friendly banter. Superior National didn’t feel stuffy or pretentious.

It’s easy to tell this course is tended & cared for by a professional and dedicated maintenance crew. The greens and fairways were in great condition. There are plenty of tees from which to choose, I think four or five per hole depending on your level of expertise. In all honesty, Eric and I played the reds and we didn’t track our score. But, we sure had a ball!
How convenient is this!? You can place a snack or lunch order via Superior National’s convenient menu, posted right inside the golf cart – hard to miss! We only played nine holes, so opted for lunch inside the clubhouse….
The food was affordable and made-to-order. The hotdog and Polish sausage were quite flavorful and the fries were my favorite. We loved the variety of “fixins” to top off our hotdogs – jalapenos, onions, pickles, relish, mustard, etc. Really tasty! The O-rings were so-so; the breading was a bit heavy so I wouldn’t order those again. Best of all, the beer was cold!
Looking forward to next time we can play this truly Superior and championship course and am hopeful we can get Z & E to give it a go! The course seemed family friendly and there were golfers of all levels & ages honing their games. Imagine these views in the fall with the leaves at their peak! Reading about the course, on Sept. 7, 2017 they’ll open a newly renovated Canyon course, which is supposed to be amazing. The other two courses are the Mountain course and River course.
On your next trip to Lutsen, I hope you can swing in to Superior National for some fun – sorry, such a bad pun. I just couldn’t resist! #xo
